Before the move � what you can do

Moving house can be a stressful experience. With so much to organise and so many phone calls to make, it can be easy to let things get on top of you. Don�t let the packing become a nightmare; follow some of our handy hints and tips for things you can do in the lead up to a move to make your life that little bit easier.

First steps
Although you will need some of your stuff up until right before the moving day, a good deal of your packing and planning can get underway well before you need to start loading the van.

• Clear out the clutter � a house move is a great time to get rid of bits and bobs you don�t need any more. Take a box to the charity shop, or get online to sell some items. Use any money raised through your efforts to buy something nice for the new house.
• Get organised � have a look around your house and try to figure out how many boxes you�ll need. Then add some more. Start stockpiling things like newspaper, bubble wrap and packing tape ready for packing your belongings.
• Get underway � pack some non-essential items, such as the books off your bookcase or some of your CD�s and DVD�s into boxes; you�ll feel much better once you�ve made a start.
• Measure up � if you can, try to find out the measurements of the rooms your furniture will be going into, and check everything will fit. If you are unsure whether something will go in, you can always put large items into self storage for a while until you know for sure where it�s going to go.
• If any of your items are going into a self storage facility, get this organised and send them off early: you�ll appreciate the extra floor space once they are gone!
• Check you�re covered � call your insurance company and make sure you will be covered for any breakages during the move.

Planning ahead
Reduce stress at the other end by packing with a plan in mind.

• Label a box as �essential� and fill it with everything you need soon after you arrive at the house. Include your tea and coffee, your kettle, cups, plates, some snacks and a tea towel so you can have a break when you get there.
• Pack an overnight bag for everyone in the household including toilet paper, toothbrushes and a change of clothes.
• Keep a stash of useful things close at hand, such as a small toolkit, painkillers, a torch and a first aid kit.
• Plan to get your laundry done before you move, otherwise you may need to move damp clothes.
